Leonardo Villar Gómez, current representative of Colombia before the International Monetary Fund, was elected this afternoon as the new manager of Banco de la República, replacing Juan José Echavarría, who at the Bank’s meeting last October, declined to run for a new period.

The current general manager of the bank, Juan Jose Echavarría He will be in office until January 3, 2021. However, at the end of this Thursday’s extraordinary meeting, the members of this board of directors thanked him for his management during these four years, “time in which the Bank advanced in modernization and efficiency processes, and the international and local reputation of the Entity was maintained”.

At the beginning of September 2018, the then Government designated it as Principal member of the Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). At that time, he was executive director of the Fedesarrollo economic studies center, a position he arrived at in April 2012.
Villar Gómez obtained his degrees as Economist Cum Laude and Master in Economics from the Universidad de los Andes. He also studied at the London School of Economics, where he obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Economics and pursued doctoral studies.
Before taking over the direction of Fedesarrollo, he was Chief Economist and Vice President of Development Strategies and Public Policies of the Andean Development Corporation (CAF).
In the Colombian public sector, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Banco de la República de Colombia for twelve years, Technical Vice Minister of the Ministry of Finance and Advisor to the Directing Council of Foreign Trade.
He was directly linked to the Colombian financial system as a member of the boards of directors of various public and private institutions: Vice President of the Foreign Trade Bank (Bancoldex) and Technical Vice President of the Colombian Banking Association.
He has been a professor at several Colombian universities and has multiple publications in the areas of macroeconomics, foreign trade, and monetary, exchange and financial policy.
