Italian cyclist Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) won the fourth and penultimate stage of the 51st edition of the Star of Bessges, a 151.7-kilometer day held this Saturday between the French towns of Rousson and Saint-Siffret.
With a time of 3 hours, 22 minutes and 57 seconds, Ganna won alone in the arrival at Saint-Siffret ahead of the French Christophe Laporte (Cofidis) and the German Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe), second and third respectively.
Ganna, who was part of the day’s escape, left the company of her fellow adventurers 9 kilometers from the end to go solo in search of her first victory of the season.
Belgian Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal), who donned the leader’s jersey after claiming a solo victory in the third stage, remained at the head of the overall individual classification of the French round.
Wellens has a 44-second difference over his compatriot Edward Theuns (Trek-Segafredo), 46 over the Danish Mads Wurtz Schmidt (Israel Start-Up Nation), 48 over the Polish Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) and 49 over also Belgian Philippe Gilbert (Lotto-Soudal).
The Lotto-Soudal rider defending the lead this Sunday in the fifth and last stage of the Bessges star, an individual time trial with an ascent finish of 11 kilometers in the town of Als.
