The families of the former professor of the National University, Jesús Antonio Bejarano, (1946 – 1999) and of the former Army Commander and former Defense Minister, Fernando Landazábal Reyes, (1922 – 1995) They were surprised with the recognition of the responsibility of the extinct FARC guerrillas for the murders of these two men. (In context: It was a mistake to assassinate a politician of the stature of Álvaro Gómez: Farc).
Since their assassinations, one of the hypotheses that the justice handled was that the FARC were responsible, however, this was never proven.
In dialogue with EL TIEMPO, Olga Landazábal, daughter of the former minister, said that she hopes that “if what the FARC said is true, it is the true truth.” and show the proof that they really did have your father murdered. “In the bottom of the heart the only thing we want is the truth,” he said.
Olga says that in these 25 years her family has trusted the judicial authorities to tell them what the truth is so that there is justice. However, she warned that “unfortunately until now there has been silence and they have almost wanted to erase it from history.”
(Also: The history of the murders that the Farc is recognizing).
“Over the years we were summoned to the Prosecutor’s Office (Olga and her five brothers) and we saw a large file, full of almost blank pages that said nothing. They haven’t done anything ”, he pointed out.
The former minister’s daughter assured that her father’s death was “an instrument to achieve something” and that she does not want “the same thing to happen again at this time: that they want to use it again to achieve something.”
For his part, General Rafael Samudio, who knew Landazábal since the 1950s when he was his student and they strengthened their relationship when he was second commander of the Army and Landazábal was Minister of Defense, said that he is shocked and surprised by this announcement and that the country should demand that justice present results and “Confirm or reject the information of the Farc.”
Eduardo Bejarano, son of the economist, ex-professor and ex-peace negotiator, received the news with hope, prudence and a little reserve.
(Do not remain unread: The surprising turn that the FARC confession gives to the case of Álvaro Gómez)
“That letter is not enough. What they affirm there must be ratified with proofs and evidences ”, assured this newspaper.
He added that it is a “complete shame” that this case has been “21 years in impunity.”
The unknowns that Bejarano has, who lost his father when he was 27 years old, are many: what was the reason they had for ordering the death of his father; who gave the order; how this operation was financed; who intervened; if inside the National University there were structures linked to the guerrillas that facilitated the murder; who were the intellectual authors of it and why the FARC confessed until now.
“All these evidences and tests will have to be put on the table to know if their version is true and to know the details of this murder and to see if there is a complete truth about this,” he said.
Her sister Adriana Bejarano, who resides in the United States, told her that “this gave her a bit of peace of mind because finally someone raised her hand to acknowledge this fact, but she also manifests a deep distrust of justice and what has been going on in the case from my dad, because she feels that for many years no one cared ”.
(In other news: The place that has already controlled the coronavirus but lives confined by war and illicit crops).
Both families, more than tributes, ask for justice, truth and not to be revictimized.
