2020 closes the curtain. We are just hours away, at least in Colombia, from welcoming the new year.
In other parts of the world they have already ‘closed accounts’. Applause has already been given. Praise has already been given and, despite the covid-19 restrictions, some moderate celebrations were held on the occasion.
For some, the year ended with certain troubles. Such is the case of Radamel Falcao García, eternal scorer of the Colombian National Team and who received the dishonorable title of ‘The Disappointment of 2020’ in Turkish football.
Did ‘El Tigre’ really just meow enough to get that grayish accolade?

Falcao joined the ranks of Galatasaray, one of the strongest clubs in Turkey, in September 2019. It is worth remembering that his arrival at the team was a ‘coup’ for the spirits of the fans. It’s more: Without even having announced his signing, the shirts with Falcao’s number 9 became the most desired items in the Turkish sports market.
The ‘Tigre’ returned that affection during the first months, accumulating outstanding performances on the playing field. Even on the day of his debut he scored the winning goal against the Kasimpasa club.
In the 2019-2020 season he scored 11 goals after participating in more than 20 games. However, its performance in the current 2020-2021 has been a little lower: So far, almost three months after the start of the tournament, he has played six games and scored five goals.
(We tell him: Is Falcao’s rival at Galatasaray?).
Of course: they are not entirely bad numbers, however, a ‘stain’ of Falcao in recent weeks has been injuries and his consecutive absences in certain games.
Even so, Falcao took the title of ‘The Deception of 2020’ as a result of a series of surveys carried out by the sports newspaper ‘Sporx’, one of the most recognized in Turkey. According to the official data collected so far, 6 out of 10 respondents underlined the name of the ‘Tiger’ when choosing this year’s disappointment.
Falcao does not have all bad numbers, however, a ‘stain’ in recent weeks has been injuries and his consecutive absences in certain games
The Colombian striker, indisputable in the National Team – he scored a recent goal against Chile in qualifying rounds that saved a point for the ‘tricolor’ -, competed for the infamous award with other moderately recognized names, such as José Sosa (with a brief and noisy passage AC Milan, from Italy, and now at Fenerbahçe), the controversial Adem Ljajic (during his time at Fiorentina, from Italy, he was more remembered for his scandals than for his goals), the Uruguayan center-back Mauricio Lemos (with a brilliant performance during his stay in Spain in the ranks of UD Las Palmas) and Congolese striker Benik Afobe (currently playing for Trabzonspor).
Falcao has 59% of the votes, followed by Ljajic, with 17%. The former Atlético de Madrid, Porto and Monaco, among other clubs, has a regrettable – perhaps imminent – advantage in the race for being ‘La Decepción’.
(You may be interested: Falcao is back! He played nine minutes in the victory of Galatasaray).
The same sports magazine launched a ‘scoop’ that surprised all Galatasaray fans. Falcao, apparently, would be on the exit ramp (the transfer market in Europe begins shortly) and his replacement would be nothing more and nothing less than Diego Costa, great Brazilian striker nationalized Spanish who days ago rescinded his contract with Atlético de Madrid, Spain.
Will Falcao continue in Turkey or is it time for the roars of the ‘Tiger’ to go to another country?
