Exorbitant fees from Electricaribe to the Dau family for energy

This Wednesday the Personería of Santa Marta criminally denounced Electricaribe for the death of José Miguel Dau. The company cut off the power service when the doctor remained connected to breathing equipment. The victim’s family said the company precipitated her death and is not ruling out legal action.

The story of The Dau family is the outcome of a long process that it faces with Electricaribe due to the excessive charges on its bills. Noticias RCN learned of the decision that the Superintendency of Public Services made three years ago: it ordered the company to re-liquidate the invoices. Some reached 18 million pesos.

In October 2018 the energy came to Mr. José Miguel Dau for $ 5,088,800, six months later, in April 2019, the bill continued to rise and in total he owed $ 18,282,970

Since 2013 the torture began for the Dau family in the excessive charge of energy. They still don’t understand why they cut off the light on which Don José Miguel’s life depended. Even the Superservicios gave Electricaribe a ‘slap on the wrist’:

“It is necessary to remind the company that its administrative actions are regulated and must abide by the law, especially when it comes to applying charges, since the community must be prevented from being subjected to the arbitrariness or whim of the employees of the provider” .

Don José’s relatives do not understand how in a house where three people live, where there is no commercial premises, there were such exorbitant and disproportionate charges for the service.

In which cases can a company come to your house to suspend public services?

The national security and defense editor of Noticias RCN, Jairo Libreros, explained that the legal regime of public services in Colombia establishes three grounds for making a cut:

  • Delay in paying bills.
  • Demolition of the property.
  • Fraudulent attacks.

“However, our political charter establishes that the right to life is inviolable, it is the essence of the fundamental nucleus of human rights,” said Libreros.
