Despite the repeated warnings, recommendations and campaigns that have been carried out in the department to avoid burns due to the improper use of gunpowder, in the Atlantic recorded seven cases of burns during the Night of Candles.

Until eight in the morning of this December 8, the Regulatory Center of Urgencies and Emergencies of the District -CRUE– reported a total of three burned in Barranquilla.

The entity indicated that the three affected are adults and none of the burns was serious. One of them had to be referred for evaluation for plastic surgery, another suffered a burn on his hand (that is, 1% of the body surface) and the third required care and hospital management. Additionally, zero cases of powder poisoning were reported.

This figure was reduced compared to the Night of Candles the previous year, where only in the capital of the Atlantic, around six people were burned and a 5-year-old girl was intoxicated.

The Secretary of Health, Humberto Mendoza, said that it is necessary that this December be a month free of gunpowder, because in this way “we take care of ourselves and our families.”

“We must continue to take care of the children, We must not use gunpowder nor must we allow them to approach and use these elements. During the month of December we must take care of the children. Let’s avoid their use or manipulation. For adults a message of responsibility, no one should be using gunpowder, no one should be putting their life at risk, ”said Mendoza.

The district portfolio although highlighted the drop in cases, insisted on the need to avoid coming into contact with these explosive elements.

In turn, in the municipality of Puerto Colombia a person burned due to improper handling of pyrotechnic material was registered. The unfortunate man was an 18-year-old who suffered a second degree burn on his right hand. Later, he had to be referred to a Barranquilla clinic for evaluation.

In the same way, at dawn this Tuesday, a 15-year-old minor from Palmar de Varela suffered burns on one of his hands; on this occasion, the injury was caused by the explosion of a ‘volcano’.

Likewise, in the municipalities of Sabanagrande and Tubará, two young men aged 20 and 16 respectively, suffered burns on their hands.

The first suffered injuries to his right hand and the second had first and second degree burns in 5% of the body surface.

The first case of gunpowder burns in the Atlantic It was presented on December 5 when a 17-year-old boy from the municipality of Puerto Colombia suffered burns from a ‘tote’ that exploded in his hand.

Given these cases of burns presented on this Night of Velitas and in previous days, the Secretary of Health, Alma Solano, regretted what happened and asked the parents for greater control of their children.

“We are sorry for the injured who showed up on the night of December 7th. We will continue to send the message of no use of gunpowder. We ask the community for a greater commitment not to jeopardize its integrity, “said Solano.
