Councilor Carlos Galiana, of Valencia, Spain, was a tendency because of the subterfuge (deception, trick to solve a difficult situation) to which he resorted when he had to speak in English in the election of the European Capital of Innovation, an event organized by the European Commission, on September 25.

According to several people from the councilman’s work team to the newspaper ‘El Español’, they resorted to the controversial formula because only one person was allowed on the screen.
Furthermore, they clarified that the original exhibitor was the mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, who, unable to attend, chose his replacement.
On the other hand, Galiana referred to what happened in a statement released by several Spanish newspapers.
“I deeply regret that a specific and individual action is taking the limelight from all this journey and work that, on the other hand, we have been carrying out for years from different areas“, he expressed.

Likewise, Sergi Campillo, the deputy mayor of Valencia, defended the councilor’s work, because “thanks to his work we have been finalists,” he said in a public statement.
Other political figures were less lenient towards Galiana, who belongs to the Compromiso coalition. For example, José Gosálbez, representative of the Vox party in the Valencian City Council, publicly opined that the worst of the “shameful” intervention was “thinking that people are stupid.”

Faced with criticism from those who believe that the controversial ‘trick’ influenced the outcome of the European Commission contest, Galiana added in the public letter that the fake speech “at no time did he subtract points from Valencia’s candidacy“.
