Next November, citizens who wish to have their electronic identity card and enter the era of the so-called “digital identity” will be able to obtain the new document.
This is what the National Registrar, Alexánder Vega, told EL TIEMPO, who was emphatic that the new ID can be held by citizens who so desire and that the current document will continue to be valid.

“The certificate currently in force, remains in force, that is not going to change, what we are going to offer a new product and the citizen will see if he acquires it or not,” Vega said.
The official explained that the electronic card “is what is working in the world, it is what is called digital identity” and that the idea is that it contains additional information of the citizen to facilitate various procedures that have to be done.

Among these data that the electronic card will contain will be, according to Vega, “the civil registry, the resume, the medical history, if the citizen wants to put it there; you can enter the driving license, if the agreements and the organ donation certificate are given, which also told us that we could put it there ”.
This means, according to what was explained by the Registrar, that if a citizen requires some of these documents to carry out a diligence, they will be able to have access to them in their identity card and without having to request it from the corresponding entities.

“We are already finishing the electronic ID (…) We have projects to get 50,000 duplicates or electronic IDs for the month of November,” Vega said.
It is expected that the implementation of this new modality of the identity document will help to facilitate many procedures that citizens carry out daily and that require not only long lines, but also the use of paper that would be saved with the electronic card.
