“Plan 100 goes ahead. We relentlessly seek to eradicate the drug trafficking that fuels violence ”, were the words of the Defense Minister, Diego Molano, about the capture of the main articulator of drug trafficking in Cartagena.

Antonio Escandón González, alias ‘el Pirata’, was captured by the Police Gaula in the El Bosque neighborhood in an operation deployed within the framework of the ‘Plan 100 against micro-trafficking’.

Extensive criminal record

‘El Pirata’ is 64 years old, and for 38 years, the authorities say, he has been in the drug trafficking business. Escandón belonged to the Clan del Golfo, so his capture means a great blow to this criminal gang.

In the 80’s it started. He belonged to the Coneo Clan, a structure “dedicated especially to consolidating drug trafficking routes to Central America and the United States.” It was dismantled in 2005.

In 2007, the Police say, “El Pirata” was part of “Los Paisas” along with alias “Matías”, the main leader of the Clan del Golfo in Cartagena. “At that time they had control of drug trafficking to Central America.”

The authorities also point out Escandón to maintain his criminal role with ‘Los Pachenca’ and “have criminal alliances in 2018 with the drug trafficking organization ‘Los Grillos’.”

They assure that in 2019 he was appointed as coordinator of the drug trafficking of the GAO Clan del Golfo in the insular area of Cartagena, especially on the island of Tierra Bomba. “In that area it consolidated an important operations center for the transfer of cocaine with international destination.”

Alias ’El Pirata’ is also attributed participation in the murder of Edwin Castro Jaraba, alias ‘Chepe’, in November 2019.

The Police captured him and left him at the disposal of the Prosecutor’s Office for the crime of aggravated conspiracy to commit a crime. Antonio Escandón González “handled up to 3,500 million pesos on a quarterly basis, a product of drug trafficking,” said the institution.
