“Today we were inside the tunnel, with the governor and the mayor, and we saw the workers carry out the engine room, when a year and a half ago it was filled with water. Today, the work has been recovered and is underway ”, highlighted President Iván Duque, who posted pictures on Twitter of the tour.

The head of state said that this recovery of the Hidroituango work “is a demonstration that when there is commitment, work, tenacity and faith, things go ahead,” and he was hopeful that if the work schedule is met, by the first half of 2022 the turbines would already be installed and working.

“It is a project that represents approximately between 15% and 17% of the installed capacity of potential energy, which our country will have in the coming years”; added.

Also on the tour were the Minister of Mines and Energy, Diego Mesa; the mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero; the manager of Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM), Álvaro Guillermo Rendón, and the governor of Antioquia, Aníbal Gaviria.

Community denounces abuses by Esmad in Hidroituango area

It was precisely the departmental president that the Ríos Vivos Movement claimed, in the middle of this presidential visit, for the violence that the Esmad of the Police would have used when enforcing an eviction measure against dozens of barequeros and fishermen who work in the area of influence of the Hidroituango project.

“This is the constancy, the ‘guarantees’ of @anibalgaviria, a government that deprives the vulnerable population. All the officials who participated in this humiliating procedure should go to jail ”, denounced Ríos Vivos on Twitter.

The social movement, opposition to this energy project, published photos of what would be vanilla stun bombs used by Esmad, as well as images of the damage caused to workers’ huts at the Capitanes property, in the municipality of Briceño.

He also uploaded videos where several people complain that the Esmad chased them “exploding gases, and shooting.” “We have nowhere to go, today we have nowhere to sleep. What are they going to do with our families who live off the livelihood that we get here on the beaches?

Government justifies eviction in Hidroituango area

Noticias Caracol said that it sought the Antioquia Governor’s Office to obtain an explanation about this procedure, but that until Thursday night “it received no response.”

However, the Government has a statement on its website where it explains that these people were removed from there because the property is owned by EPM, and because it was found that “they have been opening mining tunnels in the lower part of the property, threatening the stability of the industrial road on which heavy machinery travels, used in the development of the megaproject”.
