Carlos Holmes Trujillo, who served as Colombian Defense Minister, died on Tuesday, January 26, after battling COVID-19 for more than 10 days.

Trujillo, 69, died at the Military Hospital in Bogotá after being transferred from Barranquilla on January 13.
The minister remained in an intensive care unit (ICU) and his diagnosis was that of a viral pneumonia due to coronavirus, for which he was sedated and on mechanical ventilation.
In 2017 he was one of the presidential candidates of the Democratic Center. But after a series of polls, the one anointed by former President Álvaro Uribe was Iván Duque, who in 2018 finally arrived at the Casa de Nariño.

Carlos Holmes Trujillo became, since August 2018, one of the closest men in President Iván Duque’s circle, who appointed him Chancellor.
In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trujillo was key in the strategy of ‘diplomatic siege’ that Colombia deployed to seek a democratic transition in Venezuela and in the subsequent recognition by more than 50 countries of Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela.
And in this 2021 he was given as a sure candidate for the Presidency. Unfortunately he lost the battle against the virus.

Reactions after death
President Iván Duque, surrounded by the military leadership, lamented the death of Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo, and He asked the country for unity to face this painful pandemic.

Vice President Marta Lucía Ramírez also spoke. She described the minister and statesman as a “great patriot, statesman, decent, and flawless and efficient public servant. His love for Colombia led him to give up his entire existence. An excellent human being left. “

Gustavo Petro, one of the strongest political adversaries of the late Defense Minister, wrote on Twitter: “I regret that death takes Carlos Holmes Trujillo.” And he added: “The controversy and the contradictory must have as a common basis respect for his life (…) My condolences to his family“.

The attorney general, Francisco Barbosa, said that Holmes Trujillo was “a great man who gave the country 40 years of service” and sent a brotherly hug to his family.
