More than two years have passed since DJI introduced the Mavic Air and now its renewal comes through the second generation of the drone, the DJI Mavic Air 2. An improved version especially in photographic capabilities and also in its autonomy.
The DJI Mavic Air model was positioned as a substitute for the Mavic Pro in a smaller and more compact size but with better features. In other words, the DJI consumer drone. The new generation follows in this wake focusing on improving features like camera and photography modes available to users. Let’s see some of its characteristics.

In the flight technical section the DJI Mavic Air 2 slightly improves its functions now offering a maximum flight time of up to 34 minutes, this of course, in perfect condition. DJI indicates that they have introduced new engines and a more aerodynamic design for this.
Different characteristics of the drone allow easier flights by automatically avoiding obstacles or follow a route traced by another object. The FocusTrack function for example allows you to select an object for the drone to follow automatically through the air, it also offers the option to create predetermined routes that the drone can perform automatically.
The drone also introduces new security features to avoid obstacles with front and rear sensors. They indicate that new auxiliary lights will allow the drone to land automatically and smoothly even at night. Finally, the use of geopermitting is noteworthy, which prevents the use of the drone in non-permitted areas such as airports.
Hyperlapse at 8K resolution and other camera enhancements
DJI’s Mavic for the first time introduces a 4K video mode at 60 frames per second. It is the maximum video quality that it accepts, although you can choose between different resolutions and formats:
- 4K: at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
- 2688 x 1512: at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
- 1920 x 1080: at 24/25/30/48/50/60/120/240 fps
- 4K HDR: at 24/25/30 fps
- 2688 x 1512 HDR: at 24/25/30 fps
- 1920 x 1080 HDR: at 24/25/30 fps
As for photography, the DJI Mavic Air 2 allows to capture images at 12 MP and in a 48 MP special mode with a maximum resolution of 8000 x 6000 pixels (8K). This mode is the one that also allows you to do a hyperlapse (timelapse in motion) of 8K resolution. While capturing the photos the drone can fly in free mode, in orbit, with a fixed heading or following a trajectory.
DJI also notes the inclusion of different smart capture modes to combine in HDR up to seven shots with different exposures, improved photographs in low light environments or scene recognition to level colors and light.
All these modes, the video options and in general the control of the camera and drone trajectory are configured from the DJI app for iOS and Android.
Mavic Air 2 versions and prices
Essentially the DJI Mavic Air can be obtained in two different versions. The first one is standard version which includes the drone with the basic accessories to fly and can be purchased for 849 euros. The second of them is the ‘Fly more’ version that includes three batteries with a charging center, ND filters and a battery aside from everything that comes with the standard version. The ‘Fly more’ version costs 1,049 euros. The brand offers DJI Care Refresh insurance for the Mavic Air 2 as well, giving full accident coverage and two replacement units per year.
Availability? DJI Mavic Air 2 is now available in China, while the rest of the world will have to wait until middle of May. According to DJI, this is due to the situation of COVID-19, so we will have to wait approximately three weeks for its availability in Spain and other countries.
