The first point of the decision of the Public Ministry establishes that “Declared proven and not disproved the only charge made” to the former representative to the Chamber of the Conservative Party for the Atlantic.
This charge is that of corruption to the suffrage and for the Attorney General, it is a “very serious offense by way of fraud”.
As a consequence of this, the control entity details, the sanctions are decreed:
“Impose on Mrs. Aída Merlano Rebolledo, in her condition already indicated, a sanction of dismissal and general disability for a term of 10 years.”
The document establishes that the former congresswoman must be notified of the determination and that she can file an appeal for reversal; otherwise, it will remain firm and the procedures will be in charge of the Assistant Attorney for Disciplinary Affairs.

The Attorney General’s decision is the third one taken against Merlano Rebolledo, since last May the Supreme Court of Justice upheld the conviction against her.
At that moment, the high court decided to lower the penalty from 15 years that it handed down in the first instance to 11 years and 4 months in prison “For the crimes of corruption of the suffragette, conspiracy to commit a crime and illegal possession or possession of personal defense firearms.”
The high court also asked the Senate to apply the ’empty chair’, since Soledad Tamayo took possession of the seat that Merlano obtained through electoral corruption, and with the change of legislature it was Arturo Char who had to leave that figure firmly, even if it has been peppered with scandal.
Also, a few months before, In October 2019, the Council of State confirmed the loss of investiture of the former Barranquilla Congresswoman considering that he violated the maximum spending caps in his campaign for the Senate. In addition, the CNE also charged him for that money but has not finalized any decision.
Aída Merlano escaped from the Colombian justice system on October 1, 2019 and was recaptured in January 2020 in Venezuela, where she still remains.
