From this Tuesday, December 1, the scheduling is enabled so that citizens can attend an appointment at the country’s registry offices to obtain the new digital ID. Here are some questions you may be asking yourself.

Is the use of the new digital ID mandatory?
No. The yellow hologram card will remain valid. Initially, the new digital ID will be directed to those Colombians who voluntarily require it through duplication. A Colombian who has just turned 18 cannot request this digital ID.
Are all public and private organizations obliged to accept the new ID?
Yes. In accordance with the Constitution and the Law, the identity documents issued by the National Registry of Civil Status are the only ones that prove the identity of Colombians and, therefore, must be recognized and endorsed by the various authorities, since they do not they have a substitute.
How can you have the ID on your cell phone?
If you have a smartphone device connected to the internet, you can download an application from the National Registry and, after complying with security checks through facial recognition, you can carry your fully digital ID on your smartphone.

When you change your cell phone, download the app in the new one and download the digital ID. Once you download it, it remains stored on your cell phone and you will always have access to your digital ID, even if you do not have an internet signal.
If you lose your cell phone and you had your digital ID on it, you must report its loss to disable it; But no one will use your digital ID, because to access the document the satisfactory validation of the holder’s facial biometric is required; that is to say, You must be in front of the cell phone to be authenticated by your face.
How is the digital ID requested?
1. On the website of the registry office, you can make an appointment to go to the country’s registry offices that are authorized to issue this identity document. Initially it will be in the main cities.
2. Once you go to your appointment at the registry you must pay. After that, the screen will show the person’s data. Your name, surname, RH, place and date of birth. As well as the name of the parents.
3. Once the person confirms that the data that appears on the screen correspond, the official requests the current residence address, personal email and phone number (it can be landline or cell phone).
4. Subsequently, the fingerprints are taken. At first, the person must place the index, middle, ring and little fingers of the right hand and repeat the step in the left hand.
5. Continue the registration of the thumbprints of both hands. Once this phase is finished, on the screen, the citizen can observe the taking of the 10 fingerprints.
6. Follow the taking of the photograph of the document. Which is done in the same place through a small camera accompanied by light that is in front of the person.
7. Then, the citizen must sign on a small digital screen.
8. With this, the official shows a summary of all the data that was collected during the process and the person must indicate if he agrees with them.
9. The citizen will automatically receive the digital password by email and within a period of two weeks, the document will arrive, by the same means.
10. You must go to collect the physical document at the registry office in two weeks.
What information is contained in the digital ID?
It will have data such as name, surname, identification number, place and date of birth, place and date of issue of the document, sex (the person can keep this information in reserve), signature and photo.
In addition, it will have an encrypted QR code, which will have security information and biometric information that will guarantee that the use of the documents can only be carried out by the owner, avoiding identity theft.
The digital ID has a mechanical reading area, which will facilitate its verification as a travel document to destinations in the Andean Community of Nations.
How much does it cost to get the digital ID?
Regarding the cost it would have for the citizen, the registrar Alexander Vega explained that this issue is being “evaluated.” According to Vega, they would be thinking about the price of the duplicate (46,050 pesos) “plus an adjustment with the consumer price index (CPI).”
Is it safe to have the digital ID?
Yes. The activation or use of the digital card can only be carried out after a verification of the identity of the holder by facial biometry, this prevents the person from being impersonated and the document from being used by a person other than the holder. So it is unfalsifiable and unalterable.

Does the digital ID expire on any date?
The digital card will be valid for 10 years, since the security mechanisms that enable it are based on biometrics and require updating in the established time.
