With a video shared on her Twitter account, Councilor Ana Erazo denounced that she had been a victim of sexual harassment in Cali.

“I usually go out on Sundays to do sports very early, which already puts us in a problem of insecurity in the city. (…) I lived through a very painful episode that I feel should be a message for the men of our city and, hopefully , of the world, “said the councilor.

According to his testimony, while jogging he heard that a cyclist was humming a song. Then what he described as a ‘horrible’ and ‘disgusting’ moment happened.

“(the young man) begins to hum a song, as if wanting to get my attention. He lifts his shirt and shows me his erect penis. This was disgusting. I started yelling at him that he was morbid, disgusting,” added Erazo.

Some athletes were alerted, but nobody did anything. “They do not know how vulnerable one feels. They do not know what one thinks at that moment. It is not fair to us. Seriously, now: let us go,” said the lobbyist.

Faced with this complaint, the Undersecretary of Gender Equality of Cali, Nancy Faride Arias, said that street harassment is a problem that affects girls, young people and older women, of different strata and ethnic groups.

“We must tell men that the compliment is unacceptable. We do not want compliments. We do not want them to refer to us inappropriately on the street. They have no right to comment on our physical appearance,” said the undersecretary.

The capital of Valle del Cauca is making progress on the project ‘Cali, a safe city for women and girls’, which seeks to make it clear that street harassment is violence and, therefore, is a crime.

“As a crime, it can be prosecuted. We are calling on women to generate support networks in the street space, of mutual protection. That we be careful in terms of proceeding to make complaints and that we continue to claim our right to a life free of violence, “Arias concluded.
