Deportivo Cali had an unfortunate match this Tuesday in the South American Cup, in which they lost 2-0 against Velez Sarsfield in Argentina, in the first leg of the round of 16. The sugar bowl started well, showed dynamism and played face to face. Then came serious arbitration errors and the VAR did not support referee Cristian Garay. In the second half, two goals from Vélez, a lack of control from Cali and a wrong penalty in the final minutes, factors that complicate the series.
Despite the heavy downpour at José Amalfitani, Cali imposed conditions, he started handling the ball, playing short, but he lacked depth, while his rival waited for any error in the sugar defense. The first Verdiblanco shot on goal was made by Ángelo Rodríguez, but the ball was deflected over the right post in the 15th minute. Then Jhon Vásquez arrived from the left with a shot to the right vertical.
Darwin Andrade also tried at 24 with a crossed left foot and Palavecino was encouraged at 29 with another shot to the portico, without direction. Then, the play of minute 30 appeared, a shot from Vásquez that hit Federico Mancuello’s arm, it was a penalty, which the referee Cristian Garay did not give.
Vélez began to worry with Almada, Déiber shot in the area and the ball hit an Argentine defender to go to the corner kick at 40. At 14 of the complement Angelo Rodríguez headed again, but again without precision. On 18, Janson demanded David Gonzalez, who sent the ball over his horizontal.
Janson shot at goal at 21, overcoming the goal line after a charge on the right, but again the referee canceled the play out of place. They called him again to the VAR and after 5 minutes of doubt he ratified the determination, maintaining the tie.
Unfortunately for the Colombian team, Caicedo received a pass from Angelo at 27 and sent it well over the crossbar. However, Vélez took the lead at 28 with a quick exit from Tarragona on the right, he put the center, González released the ball and Almada arrived accompanying the rebound to push it to the goal and score 1-0.
Rodríguez arrived again at 33, but his header hit the left post.
At 38, a counterattack that Francisco Ortega started on the left to unload Thiago Almada, who before Angulo closed it with his left foot for 2-0, at 38 of the complement.
At 49, Cali claimed a slap from Federico Mancuello to Angelo’s face and then Brizuela knocked down Jesús Arrieta, but Garay did not give the penalty either, so they called him to close his horrible performance. He went to the VAR and now he did point to the white point. Carlos Lizarazo was charged to get at least the discount at 5, but goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos deflected the ball over the crossbar.
The return match will be played on Tuesday, December 1 (7:30 pm) at the Palmaseca stadium.
