Alba Lucía Anaya, wife of Carlos Holmes Trujillo, their four children and grandchildren; As well as President Iván Duque, Vice President Marta Lucía Ramírez, the ministerial cabinet, the generals of the different military forces, and other special guests, gave the last goodbye to the Defense Minister on Wednesday, who died at dawn on Tuesday , because of the coronavirus.
The ceremony in posthumous tribute to the 69-year-old former presidential candidate was held in the Cristo Salvador Chapel, at the General José María Córdova Military School for Cadets, in Bogotá, where the ashes were held. There were also Colombian flags and a photograph of the minister in which he was smiling.
His son Carlos Mauricio pointed out that his father “was a staunch defender of democratic values and its institutions.” He recalled anecdotes such as that they were exploring what an eventual jingle would look like for his presidential campaign, his son recommended a vallenato, but he wanted a reggaeton, to be called the ‘tranqui, tranqui’.
He also said that his father would take advantage of any moment to visit his grandchildren and read them a story.
He also said that the words of solidarity from his father’s friends in the cabinet and in the Military Forces “have made a more bearable duel.”
“Dad, have a good trip, your grandchildren, my wife and I wish you a good wind and a good sea, the sky is celebrating with your arrival,” he said.
For his part, Camilo Trujillo also read an emotional message in which he said: “Have a good trip, Dad, I love you.”
Iván Trujillo, another of his sons, stressed that he was a man who “combined exquisite mixture of seriousness and tenderness, charming “(…) saying the right thing, in a framework of prudence”.
And he added that he stays with his wisdom, hugs, and learnings. “More than a minister and a statesman, you were a person of integrity, loving and warm.”
President Iván Duque also read a farewell message for his personal friend. “The life of Carlos Holmes Trujillo is a life with purpose,” he said, “he practiced politics with height, without vanities and without pursuing vanities, he had all the honors,” he added.
“I wanted Carlos Holmes as the friend, the loyal friend who tells him things as they are,” said the head of state.“He had the dream of being the ruler of Colombia (…) beyond that he had a purpose of service,” he added and said that he never saw him as a contender, when the presidential candidacy was disputed by the Democratic Center.
Duque pointed out that he remembers him as a father, because he taught him a lot about this matter, as a politician, minister and personal friend. “He was a true father, the one who teaches with all the faculties.”
Among various stories and memories, the president emphasized when the minister, after long working hours, told him: “I will fly Pre, I’m going to read a story to my grandchildren”, one of the things that Trujillo enjoyed the most.
The President assured that “honoring the more than 50,000 Colombians and this illustrious servant, we are not going to allow ourselves to be defeated, back down, paralyzed, because the challenge we have is unity as brothers, because here there are no individual triumphs.”

Finally, the President read the poem ‘El Modelo Alfabético’, by Rafael Pombo, which the president recommended that he read to his grandchildren, in one of his last conversations, and, although he did not have the time to do so, Duque pointed out that he reflects that poem, which among its letters says:
“Be kind, active, neat, kind and well-spoken, laro, more cautious in trusting,
deaf to gossip, sparing in jokes, free in worthy dependence on duty and conscience; expert in something special, frank, faithful, firm, formal; gracious, generous, humane, a good son, husband and brother. “
Minutes before, Monsignor Fabio Suescún Mutis, military bishop, was in charge of the mass.
“Carlos Holmes Trujillo has finished his transit through that land, he was a man who believed and hoped in God, that is why today we as believers meet led by the President to put him in the hands of God,” he warned at mass the priest and added: “we want to thank God for the life of the Minister and his national service”

Suescún also asked the members of the government and family of the head of the Defense portfolio for consolation. “At this time we accompany Alba Lucía, his wife, and we ask God for strength and health for her,” he said.
He also added that heaven is the next home of the defense ministry. “Death instead of tragedy becomes a transit of the full realization of our lives”, he specified
“You leave us a wonderful example, you invite us to be servants of the country and build a better world,” he concluded.
The priest also recalled that Trujillo introduced himself to Duque and told him: “Count on one more soldier,” evidencing his permanent service to the country.
After the bishop’s words they sang the song ‘Between your hands’, as well as the ‘Ave Maria’.
The event, in which around 60 people were present, began at 11:00 am and was carried out with biosafety protocols, maintaining social distancing, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
After the Eucharist, the military honors were performed.
Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo fought from January 11 to January 26 against the silent virus, which killed his life in the country’s capital.
