President Iván Duque appointed Daniel Palacios as his new Interior Minister on Tuesday morning, replacing Alicia Arango who will assume the position of new ambassador to the UN, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Palacios has just turned 38 years old, he is from Bogotá from a Vallenata family.

Daniel Palacios Martínez is a political scientist, with an emphasis in International Relations from Florida International University. He has a Master’s in Government with an emphasis in Defense and National Security from Harvard University, From where he also has a certificate in Conflict Resolution and Negotiation and is a Lieutenant of the National Army Reserve.

Palacios was chief of staff of the presidential program Colombia Joven, Advisor for Political Affairs and National Security of the Commander of the Military Forces of Colombia and the National Army, President of the Bogotá Council, Director (e) of the National Protection Unit, Governor Ad Hoc for Puerto Antioquia and current Vice Minister of Political Relations of the Ministry of the Interior.

From this portfolio, he has been leading the legislative agenda, relations with territorial authorities and public corporations, as well as citizen security issues and the fight against human trafficking.

In the accountability of this ministry, which took place this Monday, Alicia Arango assured that they met 100% of the proposed goals for 2020. “In total there were 14 commitments discriminated as follows: 10 by the Ministry of the Interior, 2 of the National Directorate of Copyright and 2 of the National Protection Unit “.

Regarding the guarantee of human rights, Arango Olmos, informed Colombians about the “launch of the Comprehensive Guarantee Program for women leaders and human rights defenders in the Montes de María and Putumayo and the presentation of the Plan of Action of the Public Policy for LGBTI sectors, which contains 72 strategic actions, in charge of 21 entities of the national order.

The head of the political portfolio also highlighted the work articulated with the local authorities and the communities of San Andrés, Providencia, Santa Catalina, Bolívar and Atlántico for the formulation and implementation of the Action Plans, with the aim of mitigating damages caused by the passage of hurricane ETA and IOTA and the winter wave.
