As explained by the senator speaker of the Honorio Henrique initiative, this project aims to give workers more time to share with their families, develop personal activities or continue their studies, without affecting their monthly income.
However, criticism from the business sector did not wait. The first to react to the Senate’s decision was the president of the National Federation of Merchants (Fenalco), Jaime Alberto Cabal, who described the approval as “irresponsible”.
“The approval of the 48 to 40-hour working day approved today in the Senate is an irresponsible approval, without any technical support, without thinking about the country in relation to the very high labor costs that this will mean for the sectors that are still affected by the pandemic ”.
The merchant spokesperson pointed out that “this goes against the signs of recovery and reactivation of the economy, it is irresponsible to have made this approval, with which the hopes and possibilities of generating employment and recovering lost employment are further reduced ”.
The president of the National Association of Colombian Entrepreneurs (Andi), Bruce Mac Master, also disagreed with the initiative that is being carried out in the Congress of the Republic and that after the approval of the Senate now goes to the House of Representatives.
“The change in working hours goes in the totally opposite direction to what it should. Job creation is becoming more expensive, competitiveness is being affected. It is regrettable that this has not been taken into account in the Senate today, the responsibility we have is great ”, he stressed.
