Senator Armando Benedetti -who was a member of the Liberal Party, was part of Uribismo and Santismo- starred in the political news of the day by announcing that he had arrived in Gustavo Petro’s Human Colombia.
How to understand this change?
Armando Benedetti: “I have never been on the right and I have never said that I was on the right. I was in the Democratic Center, but in the Democratic Center at least I was able to always defend my ideas, which are intact in what has to do with minimum doses, euthanasia or rights for LGTBI. All this that I am telling you that I defend fits into Human Colombia, that is why I am going there ”.
Are you on the left?
Armando Benedetti: This is no longer left-wing. Fidel Castro shoot anyone who was homosexual or drug addict or alcoholic. Those ideas are no longer from the left, they are progressive ideas, in which I am.
You said that you had resigned from the U Party and the resolution of that group says that you were expelled. Did you lie to the country?
Armando Benedetti: I have not lied to the country. When I announced my withdrawal from the party, I did not manage to post the letter and they expelled me, they expelled me, which in the long run serves me much more.
Could it be that the Mayor of Barranquilla is looking for, backed by Petro?
Armando Benedetti: I would give my life, what I have, if within the law and ethics I could be mayor of Barranquilla, but it has not crossed my mind.
Meanwhile, many congressmen criticized Benedetti’s change.
“There are some congressmen who must go back to the circus because they keep jumping from side to side, disrespecting ideas and Colombians”said Ciro Ramírez, senator from the Democratic Center.
Fabio Arroyave, representative to the Chamber of the Liberal Party, said: “When you go to bed being a liberal, you wake up being a Uribe and nightfall being a Petrist, like Senator Benedetti, you have shortcomings of sweet love and you need a doctor.”
