The controversy over the 5.12% increase in the salary of congressmen in Colombia does not cease.
Despite the fact that several parties and parliamentarians have stated that they will allocate the increase to social causes, analysts and workers’ centrals have raised their indignation.
From earning $ 32,741,755 to $ 34,418,133 pesos, the 280 congressmen passed after the 5.12% increase was authorized by the national government. That is, an increase of $ 1,676,000 q5,931,360,000 pesos (almost six billion pesos) will represent the country annually.
After this rise and the strong criticism that has been aroused in the country, various political sectors assured that this money will be used for social work.
This was made known by former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez, leader of the Democratic Center, and Dilian Francisca Toro, president of the U Party.
“The salary readjustment will be destined to continue with humanitarian donations, social, cultural, animalistic and environmental causes,” said the liberal Guillermo García Realpe.
But these statements for some political analysts are populist, because in many cases they preach but do not apply.
“It is an idea in my conjunctural and populist opinion, hopefully we all get to work on how to process a constitutional reform law,” said political analyst Pedro Viveros.
Also analyst Aurelio Suárez indicated that “it produces even more rejection that today returns or non-acceptances of said elevation are offered, when they are the same congressmen who have opposed modifying the current formula.”
From the workers’ centrals they demand from the national government, that since the increase was maintained above 5% for the country’s high dignitaries, the workers of Colombia be guaranteed a much higher increase.
“To the workers, the government only announces an increase to Minimum salary
3.5%, which is equivalent to $ 31,000 per month, that is to say something barely like a daily peso, with which obviously it will not be enough for much; It is a pyrrhic and miserable increase, “says Fabio Arias, CUT prosecutor.
The designated interior minister, Daniel Palacios, explained that the increase is a constitutional obligation and is calculated by the Comptroller but not by President Iván Duque. The head of the portfolio took advantage of his Twitter account to tell Congress to move from media outrage to legislative action.
In less than five years, at least nine bills that sought to reduce or freeze the salary of the country’s top dignitaries have collapsed in Congress
In addition, there are already two referendums that have been held but the vote has not reached them. One in 2002 in the Uribe government and the anti-corruption consultation.
