Cases of Kawasaki disease worldwide have recently increased, and although it has not been directly confirmed to be a cause of the coronavirus, if it is a syndrome that is associated with covid-19. In Colombia, the first case has already been confirmed.

This is not a new disease, since in the United States about 3 thousand cases are reported per year, which usually attacks a large percentage of children and especially children under 5 years of age. In Bogotá, the authorities reported the first case at Hospital la Misericordia, the minor is recovering in the intensive care unit.

What is Kawasaki disease?

This is a syndrome that causes inflammation in the walls of the median arteries throughout the body. and it affects the swollen glands during an infection, the skin and mucous membranes inside the mouth, nose and throat.

Signs and symptoms

Its symptoms are divided into two stages. In the first, fever greater than 39 ° C occurs for three days, redness of the eyes, rash on the main body and genital area, and red and swollen skin on the hands and soles of the feet. For the second stage, skin peeling of the feet and hands, joint pain, diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain appear.

Finally, if there are no complications, Symptoms slowly disappear and normal body levels can take almost eight weeks to return.

Causes

For now there is no clear confirmation of how this disease is generated, but studies show that it originates from bacteria, viruses or environmental factors. So it is not a disease that is born only by the coronavirus or that it is new because of this virus.

How does Kawasaki affect children?

Children, especially those under five years of age, are the most likely to contract this disease., which can be treated without major risk factors. In addition, boys are more likely than girls, and those of Asian or Pacific Islander origin have had this syndrome more times.

Children are affected with the following symptoms. If you have a fever and one of these signs, you need to go to the doctor:

– Redness in both eyes
– Very red and swollen tongue
– Redness of the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet

– Acne
– Swollen lymph nodes
