The coronavirus not only forced to stop soccer, now it came to sports regulations to change some things. The pandemic forced the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) to adapt the rules of the Copa Libertadores and the Sudamericana to the new context. Players are now prohibited from blowing their noses on the court, kissing the ball, or spitting. In addition, the relays that make up the substitute bank must wear masks. Everything, with the aim of minimizing contagions between the different schools.
By increasing the number of punishable infractions, Conmebol also decided to reduce by 30% the value of economic fines for each yellow card (they will now cost $ 200), while it set a floor for red cards: $ 750. Both punishments will be discounted from the money corresponding to each club for television rights.
The Conmebol also provided that the protagonists of the matches (starters and substitutes) will be subjected to temperature controls before each match. Also, it determined that the bottles of isotonic drinks or water can no longer be shared. Each footballer must have his own. Another custom that says goodbye is that of exchanging pennants before the start of the matches: it will be prohibited from now on.
Players will also have to say goodbye to a deep-rooted habit at the end of games: greeting each other with a colleague from the rival team and giving him his shirt. From now on it will be prohibited to “give away or exchange T-shirts or any part of the clothing with rivals or teammates from the same team or any other person”, according to the circular that Conmebol sent to its ten member associations.
Likewise, and based on the changes that the current pandemic introduced in the dynamics of the clubs, Conmebol decided to extend the changes in the lists in good faith for the group stage of the Libertadores and the second stage of the Copa Sudamericana. Thus, the teams competing in the Copa Libertadores will be able to make five changes in the face of the resumption of competition, while in South America the number of changes is increased from 3 to 5. At the Council meeting this Wednesday, held by videoconference, the idea was raised that both tournaments return in September, although everything will depend on the advance of the disease and that the countries open their borders and allow the travel of visiting delegations.
