The death of Antonio Bolívar, the actor who played Karamkate in The Embrace of the Serpent, reveals the serious crisis in the Amazon by COVID-19.

Antonio Bolívar became a public figure after being part of the film The Embrace of the Serpent. At 75, he lived with the reputation of having been Karamkate, the indigenous shaman and last member of his tribe who guides researchers for 40 years to find a healing plant. But, despite its recognition among the community of Leticia (Amazonas), the coronavirus and the lack of opportunities to treat it caused its death.

One of his sons revealed Antonio’s nightmare since he became infected with the virus. Cristian Bolívar narrated the newspaper Time how on April 24, his father began to suffer from a fever of 40 degrees. Traditional treatments in his community allowed him to lower his body temperature, but two days later it worsened.

He could not breathe, so he was transferred by ambulance to the San Rafael hospital in the capital of the Amazon. Still, they had to wait more than three hours for the medical vehicle to arrive. Then an odyssey followed: for several hours Antonio Bolívar remained in the ambulance while the San Rafael hospital and the Leticia clinic rejected his entry, because both medical centers were collapsed.

Finally, he entered the San Rafael hospital, where they adapted a room for him because the emergency rooms were collapsed. Cristian was unable to see his father for several days, in which the medical center assured that he was well. They were told so until Thursday, April 30 at 6:00 pm, when he visited the hospital for the last time. Two hours later, a neighbor told her that it had been revealed on social networks that her father had died.

Upon returning to the medical center, he was sent to the care area for patients with COVID-19. “The doctor came out, told me that he was delicate and died. However, they never told me that his condition was critical, on the contrary they always told me that he was better ”, Cristian pointed to Time.

The Amazon government confirmed on Saturday that Antonio Bolívar had died of the coronavirus, but Cristian was only tested to find out if he had the disease until Monday. Her death is just one of many that concern the community in Leticia, where there are more than 800 cases of the disease.
