The arrival of the pandemic implied a series of changes in the country’s educational system, including the academic calendar, since the modification of vacation dates was allowed in order to complete classes.

In other words, after classes restart at the end of the week of recess, the end of the year holidays could take longer than usual, depending on the region.

This, according to two documents issued by the Ministry of Education both in March and at the end of May, authorization was given to the secretariats of education to make variations in the usual calendar, in order to complete the 40 weeks of classes that the law establishes.

Of course, only the current week of recess in October was exempt from being modified.

Specifically, the two moments in which the change in the calendar was allowed were, in the first place, at the beginning of the pandemic, when through circular 20 the Ministry gave the endorsement to advance the mid-year vacation period with the In order for institutions to prepare for homeschooling after the physical closure of their facilities.

In a second moment, through Directive 11, the Government once again mentioned the possibility of modifying the school calendar, this time so that the institutions could comply with the weeks of class since they also need time to design and adapt the necessary protocols to implement the alternation model (which combines face-to-face classes with virtual ones).

In other words, the education secretariats were allowed to change the mid-year and end-of-year vacations if they so required, but with the authorization of the Ministry.

In the case of private schools, these also require a justification and the respective approval to make these changes.

Where would there be changes in the end of the year holidays?

To date, of the 96 education secretariats, some 57 have accepted the modification of the calendar.

For example, the Barranquilla secretariat initially brought forward the mid-year holidays between March and April. and then, he requested two more weeks of institutional development that took place between July 29 and 12.
