The covid-19 has on alert Leticia, the capital of Amazonas, which suffers from the most serious crisis in its history due to this disease, as Mayor Jorge Luis Mendoza acknowledged.

Mayor Mendoza told EL TIEMPO that to this number of deceased we must add around another 30 deaths, which are the subject of study by the INS to establish whether they also perished due to the coronavirus.

The number of deaths that were unleashed in Leticia since April 17, when the first confirmed case of covid-19 was known, not only filled the emergency services of the San Rafael hospital and the Leticia Clinic, also copó completely to the cemetery of this capital.

“Even the graves were exhausted with this tragedy. What is happening is very serious, “said the mayor.

According to the estimates made by the Mayor’s Office with the INS before the crisis broke out, in Leticia the pandemic would leave about 410 dead, figure that Mendoza considered high at the time and now fears that it is a reality.

“This problem has shown the reality and deficiency of many years of our health system and the hospital infrastructure that we have,” he added.

Mendoza added that they were recently built 52 vaults for the victims of the last month, but these are already insufficient, and now they are looking for a space to adapt a new cemetery, taking into account that the current one has exceeded its capacity and already has environmental problems.
