Through the surveillance cameras of the North County Correctional Facility, in the town of Castaic, in Los Angeles County, California (United States), it was discovered that uA group of inmates deliberately attempted to catch coronavirus in an effort to obtain their early release.
As explained by Sheriff Álex Villanueva, in a virtual press conference, the images show the moment when several men gathered in a common area and drank hot water from a single bottle.

According to the official’s statement, inmates performed these actions to falsely raise their oral temperature moments before a nurse checked them.
“There was a lot of space to maintain physical distance; however, the men chose to be close to each other, making their intentions obvious,” Villanueva said.
He also made it clear that there is an erroneous belief within the prison population that those diagnosed with coronaviruses can be released, “and that will not happen.”

What is true is that, in the last weeks, 21 men within the unit tested positive for coronavirus, although it is not known with certainty how they were infected.
Since the outbreak broke out, the Sheriff Villanueva made available to both staff and prisoners information about preventive practices, as well as personal protective equipment to use inside the facilities.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that, through Monday, May 11, There were a total of 4,590 quarantined inmates within the Los Angeles prison system, of whom 317 were isolated.
