Of the 937 beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for covid-19 that Antioquia has, 751 are occupied, which is equivalent to 80.15% occupancy. That is, a red alert in that regard.

According to what was explained in recent days by Lina Bustamante, Secretary of Health of Antioquia, If the situation continues like this for three days, a hospital red alert would be declared, which means that the Health Section would restrict some health services, surgeries and other non-urgent procedures.

The third day would be this Saturday, October 17.

In the case of Medellín, figures from the Antioquia government indicate that it is also on red alert for ICU beds, since out of 611 beds, 522 are occupied (85.4%).

However, from the Mayor’s Office of Medellín they have other data. According to the municipal administration, of the 1,000 ICU beds (553 for covid patients), there are 663 occupied (251 with covid patients), 302 free and 35 blocked, which indicates an occupation of 66.3% and does not even reach an orange alert (308 covid patients).

The other municipalities that present a high occupancy rate in ICU are: Rionegro, with 76 occupied beds out of 86 (88.37%); Itagüí, with 28 occupied of 32 available (87.5%) and La Ceja, that of 14 ICU beds, there are 12 occupied (85.7%).

Regarding the increase in covid-19 cases that was seen in the last week, in which Antioquia surpassed Bogotá in daily cases, Bustamante explained that it was a lag in the tests and that the situation is expected to have normalized on past holiday bridge.

And it seems to be so. In the last three days, Antioquia presented a decrease in the report of daily cases and even stopped leading this list. On October 13, they registered 1,030 cases against 1,461 from Bogotá, the next day they were 1,083 versus 1,210 and, the most recent, was 1,498 cases from Antioquia against 1,413 from Bogotá.

A similar situation occurred with Medellín, which went from having more than 1,000 cases a day during the holiday bridge, to 695 on October 13, 667 on October 14, and 888 the next day.

In ICU beds, what we observe is a downward behavior

Daniel Quintero, mayor of the capital of Antioquia, indicated that after three months of total opening of commerce in Medellín, the number of coronavirus cases “has remained controlled, with what we have called sinusoidal waves (high and low), which have been lower than we thought. In ICU beds, what we observe is a downward behavior ”.

Likewise, Quintero indicated that there will be personnel ready to control streets, terminals and airports to monitor those who enter the Antioquia capital for the Flower Fair, which will take place from November 1 to 8.
