This Thursday, the National Government took more severe measures to counter the serious expansion of the virus in the department of Amazonas and in its capital Leticia: “The closure of all its open activities,” says a circular signed by the Interior Minister, Alicia Arango.
The Government’s decision implies the “compulsory preventive isolation of all the inhabitants of the department of the Amazon” from this May 15 until May 30.

Today, 90 out of every 10 thousand inhabitants of the Amazonas department are diagnosed with covid-19, according to the most recent data published this Monday by the National Institute of Health (INS).
As EL TIEMPO has reported, it is the highest rate in the country, even exceeding Bogotá, where 5.5 out of every 10,000 inhabitants has been confirmed with the diagnosis.
But in Leticia, the capital of Amazonas, the situation is critical. The first case detected there was known on April 17. And today, less than a month later, in this southern department of the country there are 924 cases.
The decision of the National Government, through the Ministry of the Interior, was issued, within the framework of paragraph 7 of article 3 of Decree 636 of 2020, External Circular 054 of 2020, which orders the Governor of Amazonas and the Mayor of Leticia, the closure of all activities open today in the municipality and the entire territory of the department, with the exception of activities strictly necessary for health, supply and essential services.
The Ministry of the Interior, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, will support the Governor and the Mayor in the process of monitoring the closure of activities. that correspond and to the issuance and implementation of the corresponding regulations, in order to guarantee that these measures, exclusive to the department of Amazonas, safeguard the life and health of the citizens of this territory.
Consequently, and within the legal powers that assist this portfolio, it orders the governor of the department of Amazonas and the mayor of the municipality of Leticia, the closure of all activities open today in the municipality and the entire territory of the department and urges to the local leaders to proceed with the issuance of the decrees to which there is room to comply with the orders and instructions given to guarantee the health and life of all its inhabitants.
However, some exceptions are enshrined:
– Assistance and provision of health services
– Acquisition and basic necessities, the circulation of a single person per family nucleus will be allowed.
– Transfer to banking, financial and payment operator services, and notary services.
– Assistance and care to other people who require assistance from trained personnel.
– Causes of force majeure or fortuitous event.
– The provision of public and private professional, administrative, operational, and technical health services.
– The chain of production, supply, storage, transport, marketing, and distribution of medicines, pharmaceuticals, supplies, cleaning products, disinfection and personal hygiene for homes and hospitals, equipment and devices of health technologies, as well as maintenance and support to guarantee the continuous provision of health services.
– Activities related to emergency services.
– The activities of operators of payments of wages, fees, pensions, public and private economic benefits; periodic social economic benefits (BEPS), and those corresponding to the Social Security and Social Protection systems and subsystems.
– The operation of critical infrastructure, computers, computer systems, communication networks, data and information whose destruction or interference can weaken or impact the security of the economy, public health or a combination of them.
Summit between Colombia and Brazil
The president also announced that this Friday “a Summit will be held in which the Colombian Foreign Minister, the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Health will participate with their counterparts in Brazil, so that the homogeneity of policies in the border area can be applied and that that allows us to prevent cases in the two countries at the border points. That will be extremely important, “he said.
