Coronavirus and quarantine: Avianca begins offering flights from May 11 – Business – Economy

This Thursday, Avianca airline began promoting seven national routes, which would start operating on May 11, which is the date that the National Government has stipulated, until now, for the termination of the mandatory quarantine that governs the entire country and which began on March 25.

Although the government of President Iván Duque has not yet announced the reactivation of national flights, after they were suspended as a measure to mitigate the spread of the covid-19 pandemic across the country, Avianca announced operations.

The airline indicated, through an email, that From May 11 to 31, seven national routes will be available. Likewise, he pointed out that the rates will have only 5 percent of VAT and the itinerary may be changed without penalty and rate difference.

In the message, Avianca assured that the routes will be Bogotá-Medellín, Medellín-Bogotá, which will have three daily flights; Bogotá-Cartagena, Cartagena-Bogotá, with two flights a day; Bogotá-Cali, Cali-Bogotá, with two trips; Bogotá-Barranquilla, Barranquilla-Bogotá, two flights a day; Bogotá-Santa Marta, Santa Marta-Bogotá, a daily journey; Medellín-Cali, Cali-Medellín, two trips a day and Medellín-Barranquilla, Barranquilla-Medellín, one daily flight.

The company noted that they have adapted the biosecurity protocol for the emergency to comply with the protection and cleaning measures. He indicated that they will implement new processes that ensure social distancing at airports and with protection elements for personnel.

On April 20, when the extension of the quarantine was announced until May 11, President Iván Duque assured that national flights will not be enabled until the end of May.

“In the first place, during the health emergency until the end of May, we will not have international flights, except for those that respond to cargo issues and humanitarian reasons (…) We will not enable national flights until the end of the health emergency, except in cases that are also contemplated, taking into account health, public order, state operation and humanitarian circumstances.“, indicated the president at the time.

In recent days, the airline proposed that the Colombian government provide it with financing in the midst of the economic crisis that the pandemic is undergoing.

“We are ready to repay a loan, if liquidity is needed. The governments are supporting the airlines with liquidity, they do it because they have closed the borders and there is no demand,” Avianca president Anko van der Werff said at the time.
