Deportes Tolima was eliminated from the 2020 South American Cup after drawing 1-1 against Unión La Calera in the second leg of this Tuesday. The Colombian team, leaders of Colombian football, could not prevail against a very tough Chilean defense that managed to stand out in the second half.
With the first leg tied without goals, the Chileans came to Ibagué to fight the ball in the center of the field and play the match with great physical strength. That was how Jaminton Campaz, Andrey Estupiñán and Omar Albornoz were hit at the beginning by the arrows of the Pijaos.
Tolima was not daunted and also began to fight the game more than to play it, which lowered the rhythm and intensity of the Chilean club’s players.
That led to few goal actions in the first 30 minutes of the match. Beyond some deflected spikes and some speed-driven approaches, the game lacked emotion under the sticks.
But when Unión La Calera showed its best face and put the blows aside, Tolima’s goal appeared. On the left, Omar Albornoz carried the ball almost 50 meters and gave a pass to the edge of the area, where Jaminton Campaz appeared to finish it off and, with a small deflection, scored the 1-0 of the match.
The goal enlivened football at Manuel Murillo Toro. Tolima began to touch and handle the ball with great property, leaving Union La Calera football lifeless, which only defended itself and sent a long ball to the vinotinto y oro area.
However, when the first half was about to end, Unión La Calera began to send crosses and one of those passed from left to right, Valencia received and gave it to Vilchés, who only had to finish with the defeated goalkeeper. There the first half ended.
From the beginning of the second half it was noticed what the rest of the game would be. The Chilean team came out with a great defensive vocation as a result of five defenses and two recovery flyers.
Tolima had to be the protagonist, but his football without spaces to take advantage of the fast players of the attack was not productive at all and the Chileans fought on every corner of the field.
Hernán Torres made the changes to have more play in the center with Daniel Cataño, but the Chileans ran to all the Tolima players so as not to give them a single space to think.
Tolima fought and wanted to find the goal that would qualify them for the next phase of the Copa Suramericana, but the intensity with which the Chilean team defended made it impossible for that goal to give them a place in the next phase of the championship.
Now, Unión la Calera awaits a rival between Atlético Junior and Plaza Colonia, a series that the Colombian team is winning 1-0.
