Through Decree 1779 of December 24, 2020, the Government issued the “readjustment of the monthly allowance for members of Congress”, in which it is specified that “as of January 1, 2020” this allocation will be readjusted in 5.12%.
With the measure, which “has tax effects as of January 1, 2020”, the monthly allowance of the members of the Congress of the Republic goes from $ 32.7 million to $ 34.4 million.
Congressional sources told this newspaper that this year they had not increased the number of congressmen and the norm reads that the allocation of members of Congress will be readjusted each year, according to the certification issued by the comptroller general.
The salary of the administrative staff of the Congress is also adjusted and in this way the general secretaries of the Senate and the House will have a salary of $ 17.9 million, plus the monthly management premium of $ 2.1 million.

And the general undersecretaries and the secretaries of the constitutional and permanent legal commissions of both corporations will have a salary of $ 14 million plus a monthly management premium of $ 1.7 million.
Meanwhile, the former president and former senator Álvaro Uribe announced yesterday that the congressmen of the Democratic Center will not receive the salary increase decreed by the Government for members of Congress.
The leader of the government community added that the parliamentarians of that bench “analyze whether they reject him or assign him to a social task.”
Through a message on the virtual social network of Twitter, the former president also warned that “they will insist on reducing the Congress, the salary” and reiterated that “the referendum that also reforms the JEP must be resumed so that those responsible for the rape of children do not they can be congressmen ”.
For its part, the Ministry of Finance also issued a statement yesterday stating that the “wage increase for public employees and congressmen for 2020 is less than the increase in the minimum wage.”
In this sense, the document states that “it must be remembered that the increase in the minimum wage for 2020 was 6%, while that of public employees and congressmen is 5.1%”.
And he concludes that this is what the law dictates.
