The journalist and writer Adriana Villegas Botero is the author of the opinion column ‘It’s not a joke, it’s violence’, published in Homeland, which caused quite a controversy when recounting the songs of the soldiers of the Manizales Battalion and which incited violent behavior against women.

“A minute before I died / I heard my girlfriend’s voice / That with a bitch voice she told me / If you die, I’ll give it to the police. Because I am, ha, I am, ha, the black vampire / I I never had a mother, nor will I ever have her / If I ever had, I hanged her with my hands. / I never had a girlfriend, and I never will, / If I ever had, I took out her eyes ”, are some of the words that generated outrage.

Villegas reported that one of the reasons why he was encouraged to write it was that nothing had changed between the songs he related in a column two years ago, in which he also referred to the aggressiveness of the words used, even though the signing of the peace agreement.

“I daily listen to the national anthem, the screams, the soldiers sweeping at dawn. There is a daily life with the battalion. When I heard this I thought that It is not the type of messages that I want my daughter to hear and with which I not only feel offended, but also any person who does not share those speeches, ”Villegas said.

The journalist has been a neighbor of the Battalion for more than five years, so the songs are not strange to her, but that is not why she accepts and does not differ with their content.

Criticisms have been left over after the publication, there are those who argued that women like her need to pay for service or if they expect a soldier to sing Christmas carols. Mamerta, a leftist, among other qualifications, has received through her social media accounts for making visible a situation that is not exclusive to the soldiers of the Ayacucho Battalion, but has been transmitted from generation to generation and from base to base within the National Army.

“I am not saying anything false, I do not put hidden microphones to the battalion, they are the ones who enter my room with their songs and this is not new. It is unfortunate that it has been practiced 70 years ago, but it does not mean that it should remain the same or that it cannot be revised, ”said Villegas.

Although much of the controversy was sparked because there were comments that incited violent behavior against women, the writer maintained that all messages cause sting.

“For my profession, I consider that language creates realities, it is very important to take care of the words that are chosen to name things. Dehumanize a woman, her girlfriend, mother or someone else, is the first step to create enemies, “added Villegas.
