Corponor found that the intervention does not meet the requirements or permits granted by the corporation.

Upon reaching the Paramuna area, the officials found that the intervention carried out at more than 3,000 meters above sea level did not comply with the requirements or permits issued by the corporation.

“A preventive measure of suspension of activities was imposed immediately to the alleged damage caused in the La Plata village of the Mutiscua municipality, in the Santurbán páramo”
Corponor noted.

The environmental authority invited citizens to continue denouncing activities that threaten the Santurbán páramo or incidents that pose a risk to the conservation of natural resources.

Population of the moors

In the Santurbán páramo there is a peasant population dedicated to agricultural activities, which makes it necessary for national and regional environmental authorities to explore a balance between the protection of ecosystems and the well-being of the peasants.

Misael Gamboa, mayor of Mutiscua, affirmed that the case registered in the La Plata village is just one example of the multiple actions of the peasants that have affected the páramo in recent years.

Road in the páramo de Santurbán

The environmental authority invited citizens to continue denouncing the activities that attempt against the Santurbán páramo.

“Some people decide to build roads over old roads, so they put heavy machinery in, others expand the land for their crops. We also have records of inhabitants who put motor pumps in the river to irrigate potato crops, “Gamboa said.

The official ruled out that there is mining intervention in the area and acknowledged that the peasant population rejects mining projects in the Santurbán páramo.

“The inhabitants argue that they need to work, but the problem with agricultural activities that do not comply with environmental guidelines is that they end up affecting the ecosystem, the frailejones and water sources,” he added.

According to Law 1930 of 2018, the use of heavy machinery in the development of agricultural activities must be subject to the development of low-impact tasks, which are compatible with the protection of the moors.
