In the session in the Chamber this Tuesday, Representative Erwin Arias, who was against the initiative, said that he would approve that project it was normalize that a person wants to take their own life, which upset César Lorduy, a congressman who revealed the suicide of his daughter.

“No one here in this room has the authority to speak on behalf of these people; and Dr. Erwin does not have it because I had a daughter who committed suicide. You have no moral authority to speak for herLorduy said.

He also described as “disrespectful, offensive, unhealthy and even evil” the idea of ​​defending a conviction talking about suicide.

Arias apologized to his colleague and expressed solidarity. However, he said that these issues, which affect an entire country, could not be taken to a personal issue.

And it is that unlike his benchmate, Lorduy stated that beliefs could not be surpassed over the rights of Colombians, that has the “freedom to live and not to live when suffering is incurable by any health system”.

“If living with dignity is a right, it is also with dignity,” added the parliamentarian, as heard below.

For Lorduy, euthanasia should be a legal practice as it already is in several first world countries. However, others, such as Arias, Margarita Restrepo (from the Democratic Center) and Adriana Magali Matiz (from the Conservative party), do not agree and wanted the project to be shelved.

The discussion finally passed the first debate, and should continue its process this Thursday.
