From health there is also financial protection for Colombians
The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has made an effort so that, in addition to guaranteeing comprehensive health care for Colombians, it does not represent excessive spending. This was highlighted by the Deputy Minister of Social Protection, María Andrea Godoy Casadiego.
“One of the advances to be highlighted that the Colombian health system has always had is that of the financial protection of households and individuals derived from the health risks that may arise and the health eventualities that may arise”, said.
This means that Colombians are guaranteed to have access to health services in the IPS and providers of their EPS network, recognizing that 97.74% of Colombians have health insurance in any of the regimes (subsidized, contributory or special according to the projections of the population with the 2018 census).
However, in cases where the population is not insured, there is an official affiliation mechanism, with which IPS and territorial entities can affiliate. “Financial protection is also reflected in out-of-pocket spending, which, in the case of the Americas region, that of Colombia is one of the lowest, just 16.3%,” said Godoy Casadiego.
This means that the State makes the highest expenditure on people’s health services, so that the user has a minimum expenditure and does not represent a risk to their personal finances. These are financial protections for families and are due to the financial effort made by the National Government in order to finance the system, as reflected in the increase in health spending. Said in this way, health spending in the country has been increasing permanently and progressively in recent years, being in 2019 7.4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
