The Consumer Price Index (CPI) of Colombia registered an inflation of -0.01% in August, the third month of the year with a negative result, reported this Saturday the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).

According to the agency, in August there was negative behavior in sectors such as education (-3.48%), clothing and footwear (-1.00%), and food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.45%), which may be related to the lower economic activity in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic.
On the other hand, the sector with the greatest variation in prices was the information and communication sector (3.60%), followed by health (0.70%) and various goods and services (0.49%).

Deflation in August contrasts with inflation of 0.09% in the same month of 2019, according to DANE data, and it is the third time this year that the CPI has shown a negative result after May (-0.32%) and June (-0.38%), while in July the result was neutral, with 0.00%.
With the result of August, accumulated inflation in the first eight months of the year in the country was 1.12%, while in the same period last year it had been 3.03%.

As for annualized inflation, it stood at 1.88%, half of the previous reference period, which was 3.75%. In 2019, Colombia accumulated inflation of 3.80%.
