“It would be a dream to wear the Colombian shirt”, declared Luis Javier Suárez in March when he was related to the possibility of playing for the Spanish National Team due to his dual nationality.
At 22 years old, this Samarian striker who had a brief stint in the second division of Colombia, made headlines in the Old Continent for his great scoring quota with promotion football, and for the opportunity that brought him closer to dressing internationally in red and not yellow. “There are many decisions that have to be made, but in the end I am Colombian,” said the striker who at the time assured not to close the doors to a possible call from Spain, but that his enthusiasm and heart was with the Colombian National Team.
Suárez, born in Santa Marta but with Spanish nationality, arrived in this territory in 2018 to join the discipline of Granda, a team that opted for him when he was only 18 years old. Watford was the team that months later kept its sports rights, to later transfer it to Real Zaragoza, a club in which it had a magnificent season, and thanks to that performance it is back in Granada today, playing La Liga alongside the big and the Europa League.
Finally, Suárez’s dream came true: he was summoned by Carlos Quiroz to the Colombian Senior National Team for the duels against Uruguay and Ecuador for Qualifying. It is his memento.
After his scoring debut with the ‘Nazarí’ team in European competition, Luis Javier Suárez will land in Barranquilla together with the Colombians residing in Europe in the next few hours, to continue with the dream of Qatar 2022. The Colombian-Spanish knows that the day has arrived , then, as one of the great novelties in the list of 24, he was chosen to make up for the absence of three strikers who in weeks ago seemed fixed: Córdoba (injured), Falcao (injured), Borré (infected).
Now, the challenge for this young gunner is to show that he is made to play with the Tricolor, his great moment in Spanish football certifies the qualities he has to shine with the senior team and that is where he will have to bring out his good season. Surely he will not be a starter, but his adaptation to the extremes, in addition to being a center forward, gives him a high probability that he will be used in one of the two Playoff games.
