‘Halfway’, that’s how the Christmas lights were lit in Cartagena last night, December 8.

Although the mayor William Dau Chamatt, together with the social manager, María Angélica Klee, and the General Secretary (e), Myrna Martínez, in an official act transmitted by social networks they turned on the lighting, only part of the Christmas decoration was ready, Despite the fact that the agreement signed between the District and the Public Services Company of Sabaneta EAPSA, for the installation, maintenance and dismantling of the Christmas lighting, indicated that it should be complete before December 6.

On a tour made by The universal It was evident that some points, already announced, were incomplete and even the women selected to weave the giant letters with representative words of the city were working on the figures.

In the Camellón de los Mártires the letters that make up the word “heroic” were incomplete and unlit; in the Clock Tower the phrase “Cartagena is” was off; on the Los Pegasos dock the word “hope” was not ready; in the Plaza de Los Coches where the word “ours” should go was empty and dark; Meanwhile, in the Plaza de La Aduana, which had a giant tree lit up and the word “transparency”, weavers finished the words “resilient” and “inclusive”.

The points that were ready were Calle Santa Teresa (Route 1); Cathedral- Adolfo Mejía Theater; Calle 36 (route 3); 34th Street (Route 5); race 7 (route 4); Villa Rosita park; Perimeter park; The Pilandera Pool; Walls; Simón Bolívar Park and La Proclamation Square and San Diego Square.

Unsupported

The Mayor’s Office of Cartagena planned to illuminate another 23 areas of the city, which were subject to the collection that the Public Services Company of Sabaneta would manage with the private and public sectors. However, this year the support of companies and different organizations was minimal and these points could not be financed.

Only part of the Christmas decorations were sponsored by Comfenalco, Coosalud, the Sociedad Aeroportuaria de La Costa (Sacsa), Esenttia, Davivienda and the Port of Cartagena.

The points that were left without lights were: Santander Avenue section 1, 2 and 3, La Tenaza, La Marina Park, Bocagrande roundabout, El Pescador park, María Mulata park, San Martín avenue, Bocagrande pedestrian promenade, Roman bridge, Calle Larga, Calle Media Luna Carrera 10, Plaza de La Trinidad, Brussels Park, Los Caracoles, San Francisco, Blas de Lezo, Bomba El Amparo, among others.

According to the agreement, the Dau administration contributed $ 2,406,221,948 with resources from the public lighting tax, while the Sabaneta Public Services Company would manage the other $ 2,354,341,702.

What does the Mayor’s Office say?

The Mayor of Cartagena stated that of the 17 points to be illuminated, only the letters that are located in the Plaza de Los Coches, Camellón de los Mártires, Los Pegasos dock and in the Clock Tower are missing, since this is a job they carry out weavers manually and requires more time.

The Dau administration added that the idea is also that tourists and locals appreciate the work that these women heads of households from neighborhoods such as Olaya Herrera, El Nazareno, El Pozón, among other sectors, do with each of the words. “For the first time, 40 mothers who are heads of households from different neighborhoods of the city are the protagonists during the assembly of the Christmas lighting,” said Myrna Martínez.

The Mayor’s Office indicated that the decoration of the Plaza de La Aduana is already ready and the rest are expected to be lit this weekend.

History repeats itself

In 2019, under the administration of Mayor Pedrito Pereira, only 16 points in the city were illuminated, of the 42 that had been initially promised.

That year, on December 7, the date chosen to turn on the lighting, only four points were ready, the rest were turned on in the following days.

The points that were illuminated were: Plaza de La Aduana; Clock tower; Camellón de los Mártires; Heredia Theater; Bolivar park; Fernández Madrid park; San Diego park; Students’ square; some routes in the Center (Santa Teresa Street to Santo Domingo Square, from Adolfo Mejía Theater to Bolívar Park, from Clock Tower to Fernández Madrid Park and from Clock Tower to Bolívar Park); Los Pegasos pier, Santander avenue and La Marina park.

After several inconveniences, the Christmas lighting was ultimately provided by the Unión Temporal Concesionario Alumbrado Público de Cartagena.

This 2020 the decoration is framed under the concept #CartagenaEs, which seeks to highlight the qualities of the city.

Within the framework of this, the Dau administration invited citizens to share their photos and experiences on social networks, telling what Cartagena means to them, with the hashtag #CartagenaEs.

The Mayor’s Office also asked Cartagena and visitors to visit the different points with Christmas decorations in a controlled manner and in compliance with biosecurity measures.

It should be noted that the Christmas lighting can be visited every day until Sunday, January 10, 2021.
