The first to be burned was the San Francisco de Borja Church, used regularly by the Carabineros police force for institutional ceremonies, the EFE agency said. That sanctuary, located in the center of the Chilean capital, was built in 1982, and had already been attacked in January, according to El Comercio, by hooded men who burned benches and part of the structure.

Later, the protesters destroyed the Church of the Assumption, one of the oldest in the capital, more than a century and a half old.

In a video shared on social networks, and published below, a group of protesters is seen celebrating while the La Asunción tower fell, due to the flames.

The violent day also left several shops in Plaza Italia, downtown Santiago de Chile, looted, including a supermarket of an international chain and a pharmacy, adds AFP.

In addition to the material damage, the fire in the last church killed several kittens, who were in a kennel that operated in that place, said the Chilean media ADN.

According to the portal, 7 animals of that species were in the place at the time of the incident; volunteers only managed to rescue two, which were handed over to the Chilean firefighters.

For their part, the Carabineros reported that at least 18 agents were injured in different parts of the capital. Unlike other weeks, the police force was retracted for most of the day and began to act when the excesses began.

Five hooded men were captured by the fire in the San Francisco de Borja Church; one of them was detained inside the structure, and the other 4 outside.

According to the media, the massive march, which during the morning and afternoon passed quietly, commemorated the first anniversary of the most serious protest in that country, since the end of the military dictatorship, which led President Sebastián Piñera to convene a plebiscite to change the constitution.

Precisely, the demonstration took place a week before the historic plebiscite, a triumph for the social movement that emerged in the streets of Chile just a year ago.
