The Liberal party announced that it created a commission to institute lawsuits in Colombia and before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to “defend the water from the exploitation of gold that it wants to do in Santander”, specifically in the Páramo de Santurbán.

Congressmen of this party indicated that together with the lawyer Manuel José Cepeda and the former minister Manuel Rodríguez Complaints will be filed next week regarding the option of exploring for gold in the vicinity of the Páramo.

“We are not going to allow mining to be practiced in moorlands and natural reserves. The Liberal Party passed the law for the protection of moors several years ago to prevent water and minerals from being taken from our natural reserves, this time we are going to proceed legally to oppose this exploitation, “said the former Liberal president.

In its eighth congress, held last month, this community unanimously approved to assume the legal defense of the Páramo de Santurban.

For several weeks the debate in Congress about the future of the Santurbán páramo has revived. The plenary session of the Senate approved, unanimously, the creation of an accidental commission that will be in charge of monitoring the actions of the National Government for the preservation of this important natural reserve of Santander and Norte de Santander.

In Colombia, mining in moorlands is prohibited. However, due to the large-scale mining project that Minesa has contemplated in areas of influence of the Santurbán páramo, those who are against the project, assure that in the eastern area of influence there is the sub-paramo and the high Andean forest, important ecosystems that connect.

According to the Minesa company, “The project is 2,600 meters above sea level (masl) and descends to 2,200 masl, outside the protected area of the páramo de Santurbán, which according to Resolution 2090 of 2014 of the Ministry of the Environment, is between 3,100 and 2,800 meters above sea level ”.

In other words, it is effectively outside the current delimitation of the moor. However, the argument of those who are against is that it would be done in ecosystems just as important as they are connected.
