Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo plays crucial moments to defend his continuity in office.
During this Wednesday the minister responds to the Plenary of the Chamber, in a debate of motion of censure, for the cases of abuse of force by the police and military that have known each other in recent days and the possible contempt for a ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice, in which he was ordered to apologize for the actions of Esmad in the demonstrations in November last year.

The minister, after listening to the signatories of the motion of censure, indicated that the order of the Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, regarding the social protest, has fully complied or are in the process of being complied with.
Trujillo reiterated that, in the face of an issue that has generated controversy yes he “asked for forgiveness” and did so “voluntarily, spontaneously and from the heart.” Therefore, he emphasizes that he did not disregard the judgment of the Supreme Court.
The Ministry of Defense also reiterated its support for the Public Force and assured, referring to the criticism of the abuses by the Police, that it has been attentive so that there are better tools within the Military Forces.
“The Public Force is the pillar of sovereignty and citizen coexistence and, of course, of the democratic regime, and there are many rules and procedures to advance internal investigations,” he said, adding that the Public Force has attended more than what it is her duty, in addressing the pandemic, for which she was not prepared to “respond to this challenge.” In this regard, he said that the Public Force has had fewer agents, less budget and thus has had to guarantee that the biosecurity standards of the pandemic are met and has distributed hundreds of thousands of markets.
However, he pointed out that there may be improvements within the institutions that manage his portfolio and that he does not “pretend to show that everything is perfect.”
Additionally, at various moments of the debate, the head of the defense portfolio indicated that he will continue in his functions “until President Iván Duque allows me,” he said.
His continuity in office will depend on the answers given by Holmes Trujillo, since between three and 10 days after the debate is over, the Plenary of the Chamber must vote if it was satisfied with the minister’s explanations. If the majority vote is in rejection of the answers of the high official, this will have to leave their position.

Beyond the political effects that this debate will have, as I can find out in this newspaper, it is unlikely that in the House of Representatives 87 votes be obtained to overthrow the Minister of Defense.
