An articulated work between troops from the Nueva Granada Battalion of the Fifth Brigade, the Colombian Air Force and the CTI of the Prosecutor’s Office, allowed, in the last hours, the capture of aliases ‘Carlos el Costeño’, alleged leader of the Édgar Amilkar Grimaldo Barón Front , of the ELN and five other members of this same organization. Also, a minor recovered.
The operation took place in the path of Santo Domingo, San Pablo, south of Bolívar, where “after an arduous follow-up work, contribution of aerial intelligence of images, escort aircraft of the Colombian Air Force and after traveling an infiltration route of 30 km, the soldiers located these subjects; two of them, including the leader, had gunshot wounds apparently with some days of evolution, for which it was necessary to provide the required medical attention, “the Army reported.
In addition, they found war material for the exclusive use of the Military Forces such as hand grenades, ammunition of different caliber and improvised explosive devices activated by remote control to be used when the troops pass by.
Criminal history
At just 24 years of age, alias ‘Carlos el Costeño’ had 10 in the criminal group that he would have joined as a member of the GAO – Eln Terrorism Support Networks, where he was in charge of collecting extortions from river transporters, in the municipality of San Pablo, Bolívar; Barrancabermeja, Santander and Yondó, Antioquia.
In 2015 he would have been part of the security of the subject alias ‘Franco’, the main leader of the organization.
In 2016 he was in charge of directing financial activities through illegal mining, drug trafficking and extortion of miners, in the general area of the municipalities of Yondó and Remedios, Antioquia and in 2017, he was in charge of the commission of front finances Édgar Amilkar Grimaldo Barón.
Alias ’Carlos el Costeño’, taking advantage of his leadership and his knowledge of the area of influence of the front, took over as the main leader after a reorganization of the structures of the War Front Darío Ramírez Castro of the GAO – Eln, after the death in development of military operations of alias ‘Mocho Tierra’, last June.
According to investigations by the authorities, extortions by this criminal group range between 300 and 500 million pesos per month in their area of influence.
