The National Institute of Health (INS) revealed that from the genomic analysis of samples taken from positive patients of covid-19 a case of the lineage B.1.1.28.1, known as P.1, was detected in an older adult in Bogotá with multiple comorbidities and with no travel history, who was hospitalized and died on January 28, 2021.

According to the INS, “the case remains under study because its infection was the result of a previous positive family contact, to whom information is being expanded,” said the scientific entity.

This is the first case detected in Colombia outside the Amazon of variant P.1, which was first identified in Brazil and has been shown to be more infectious.

On January 30, the INS reported that this variant was detected for the first time in the national territory in a 24-year-old woman with dual nationality, treated in a hospital in Leticia and who is affiliated with the subsidized regime of Colombia. The woman crossed the border the day she sought medical attention in our country and the sample was taken.

The following day, the same entity disclosed two other cases of a woman and a man, both of Colombian nationality, with the Brazilian variant P1.

The patient is a 39-year-old woman, resident in Leticia, Amazonas, who presented symptoms on January 10 and was diagnosed as positive on January 15, by PCR test and that he has a history of tuberculosis under treatment and that he has evolved satisfactorily, to the point that he is already at home in good condition.

The other case corresponded to a 79-year-old man from the indigenous Amazonian ethnic group, who was hospitalized on January 7 with a diagnosis of respiratory infection by covid-19 that required referral to the ICU of another department where he is still under treatment.

So far, the presence of this variant has been found in 14 cases from the Amazon.

It is worth remembering that at the end of January the Government decided to close flights to and from Brazil and Leticia precisely to contain the introduction of this variant to the rest of the national territory, a measure that remains in place.
