When he was on his way to make the 550,000 peso money transfer that he still owed to his extortionist, a man decided to change course and go to the Gaula facilities of the Bogotá Metropolitan Police, to ask for help.

He had not gone to the authorities because he was afraid. That was what his perpetrators had warned him: not a word to the police.

The conversations with the criminals were through WhatsApp and precisely by this means they demanded money in exchange for not publishing on social networks, and between neighbors, family and friends, a montage of his in which he was accused of pedophile and rapist.

But at what point did this man, a husband and father of a family, owner of a brass store in Bosa Carbonel, become involved in this situation?

It all started when he entered a website for adults, weeks before. There, in order to acquire a supposed sexual service, He supplied his cell phone number and paid a sum of money. They contacted him and began a series of conversations with an alleged young woman.

Confidence increased and the man changed his profile picture, putting one of his with his wife and daughter. This was a huge mistake. The person on the other end of the chat, who had already saved the photo of his victim, took a screenshot of the new image, and used it to intimidate the brass.

She begins to make a series of threats in relation to a photo that she takes of the victim’s profile and makes a montage of it

“This person with whom I was speaking on chat begins to make a series of threats in relation to a photo that she takes of the victim’s profile and makes a montage that says he is a rapist and a pedophile, and threatens him, that he is going to make public on social networks and in the workplace and his wife and daughter ”, explains a researcher from the Gaula de la Mebog who received the complaint on July 1st.

The blackmailed man who filed the complaint was scared, and he quickly explained what had happened to the detectives who received the case. He was eager, he had left to make a money transfer for Efecty of 550,000 pesos. The total amount of the extortion was $ 600,000, but he had already sent $ 50,000.

The criminals knew not only of the existence of his wife and daughter, but of the brass. Someone was nearby. In fact, in the first delivery of money, the person who was intimidating him wrote that the money had been withdrawn in an office also in the town of Bosa.

An hour after the complaint was filed, Gaula units of the Metropolitan Police already had a plan to accompany this man to capture the person responsible.

They told him where to make the consignment, they had undercover men in the office where the first delivery had been withdrawn, and they accompanied the victim.

“That is immediately, he tells us and we begin the urgent actions. It took us an hour to go to the place. There a female arrives to make the withdrawal, he had already made the first payment of the 50 thousand pesos. It was lent to collect the money, because the extortions were carried out by a person who was in a prison, ”added the detective.

Who is the captured one?

The 19-year-old who was captured did not resist the procedure. She knew why they were handcuffing her. She had a close contact with a person who is in prison, and who was the one posing as a companion.

He did not have a job, he was not studying and, apparently, this time he saw an easy way to find money. The woman also had no criminal record and was sheltered by a guarantee control judge with a home insurance measure.

She became a key piece in dismantling the gang behind this case and possibly others of extortion through the internet. It has not yet been possible to determine in which prison the person pretending to be a companion is located, but the investigation is advanced, and it is expected that what happened will soon be clarified.

From the Gaula they explained that these cases have increased considerably. A researcher from said unit said that although complaints of cases of this type were common before the pandemic, successive quarantines influenced an increase in them.

“I cannot give you a figure but it did increase a lot, let’s say that before 2, 3 cases could arrive, now 7, 8, 9 cases a week arrive. That’s pretty much the comparison I can do, ”he said.

As in the latonero’s complaint, the majority of those received for this crime are from people who are extorted to avoid damaging their image with montages. However, demands for intimate photos and videos and even for private information are also recurrent.

“In this case it was not because the photo they threatened him with was a photo of his profile, it was not intimate. The greatest fear of the man was that his marriage and his work would be affected ”, said the Gaula investigator who captured the 19-year-old girl. The agent concluded by giving some recommendations.

Among others, he suggested that citizens configure the privacy of their accounts on social networks, since criminals manage to steal personal information from their victims in them.

“Try to protect the information a lot and make sure when entering these pages. Be a little more alert and report a complaint to line 165 of the Gaula Bogotá and comment on your case ”, the researcher invited.

396 virtual extortions between January and August

Major Adrián Ramos Ruiz, commander of the Gaula of the Bogotá Police, said that 60 percent of the extortion reports in the city occur due to intimidation that occurs through virtual means. As explained by the officer, of the 660 complaints that were heard between January 1 and August 20 of this year, 396 corresponded to virtual extortion.

This, authorities and experts agree, is due to the conditions caused by the pandemic. “The crisis has caused the use of digital tools to increase. This causes an exchange of information in considerable volumes to be generated, a situation that has been exploited by some criminal actors, ”explained Major Ramos.
