The mayor of Bogotá Claudia López and the manager of the Bogotá Metro Company reported today through a dam wheel how the expansion of the Bogotá Metro network will be carried out.

After several months of analysis, it was determined that the second metro line would go up to Suba and Engativá and it would have a construction and financing cost of 16 billion pesos. It remains to be determined how much the District will contribute and how much the Nation will contribute.

Transport Minister Angela María Orozco, who was also at the press conference, said that it is a pride that the Metro project is a fact and now its expansion to Suba with the best times of travel, sustainability and air. “This proves that we are thinking about the future of efficient and safe mobility for its inhabitants. It is good that they continue to think big to take this means of transport to other locations ”. More than three million citizens will benefit, added the minister.

In 2021 the feasibility studies of the project would be carried out and the following year the financial structuring and the design of bidding documents. If everything goes as planned for the second quarter of 2023, this second line that would reach the west of the city would be awarded.

The District’s goal is to achieve that by the year 2030 the capital has two phases of the heavy subway, a green corridor in Carrera Séptima, three regional trains, and improvements in the access and exit corridors to and from the capital.

The manager of the Metro de Bogotá company, Andrés Escobar, said that there is a group of institutions working towards a joint project. “We are taking a step ahead of the second extension line. We have learned from previous experiences and now we can talk about the Metro company and move forward with firm steps ”. He added that the idea is that in this new intention the National Government finances 70 percent of the work. “Big projects need strong institutions.”

The mayor of Bogotá Claudia López said that the next phase of the expansion of the Metro will reach Suba and Engativá, as a previous study could support. “The pandemic did not paralyze us, it led us to pose new challenges. In 12 years we will do what the other governments did not in 70 years ”.

Pre-feasibility studies were carried out to expand the Metro where Usaquén, Engativá and Suba were compared to arrive from Calle 72 and evaluate all these alternatives to establish the most optimal route. “But the town of Suba was the one that needed better impacts. It should be where expansion is prioritized, then Engativá and then Usaquén in the future ”.

An evaluation of seven criteria and of the resources to finance the project was made and thus it was that it was established that the route of the second Metro line that will reach the town of Suba will pass through Engativá and that it will run along the 72nd street corridor to then take Ciudad de Cali avenue.

It took several months of study for the British consulting firm Steer and the French firm Egis to conclude the first two stages of the pre-feasibility study contracted by the National Development Fund (FDN) to define the characteristics of the Second Line of the Bogotá Metro.

After analyzing variables such as the environmental impact, the demand for public transport, the social benefits; and taking into account criteria such as urban revitalization, the evaluations of the consulting companies led them to recommend that the layout of the second Metro line be the one presented today.

“When we said that Bogotá’s mass transportation system was going to be based on the Metro, we were serious. The Metro, as we promised from day one, will reach Suba and Engativá. That is why we are in this CEFE, because the workshop yard begins at the edge of the river in Bosa and will end here, on the edge of the river in Suba, ”said Mayor Claudia López.

With this line, about 2 million people will benefit in both locations where in addition to having a high population density, there is insufficient supply of mass public transport.

According to the analysis, the entry into operation of the Metro, users in these two sectors will save on trips by public transport, three days a year; corresponding to about eight and a half days of work.

The first stage of the study, for the route, was defined based on the data obtained by the 2019 origin-destination survey, and based on the projections
demographics of DANE and urban planning of the District Planning Secretariat,
that the areas of Bogotá where the new transportation system should arrive
They should be Suba and Engativá.

“To reach these conclusions, the consultants studied 18 route alternatives, all starting from the Los Héroes sector and arriving at Suba. In a layered screening process, the 13 with the best characteristics were preselected, up to the 6 main corridors. All of them were measured according to 31 characteristics with quantitative criteria that showed that The expansion should start from Caracas avenue with 72 street, heading west, until taking Ciudad de Cali avenue, surpassing the wetland system and reaching Suba ”, explained engineer Andrés Escobar, general manager of the Metro de Bogotá ”.

The particular plotting option will benefit the most
passengers, will allow easy integration with TransMilenio and the rail system
regional (Regiotram); less impact on public service networks and
will help decongest the trunk lines of Calle 80 and Avenida Suba,
ensures the study.

Additionally, the new Bogotá Metro line will generate 12 thousand meters
additional squares of public space
, including new bike paths, and the
possibility of allocating 800 thousand square meters for urban revitalization.

What comes next in the process?

After the definition of the route, the consulting companies will continue with the feasibility studies that will define the alignment of the expansion, that is, if it should be underground, elevated or level; the terminating node; the number and location of stations; the total cost of the project, and the cost / benefit. The technical process concludes with the approval of the National Government, through CONPES.

By 2022, the co-financing agreement with the National Government must be defined in order to then be able to bid and contract the work.
