A good part of the criminals in Bogotá use motorcycles to steal at different points and the authorities have identified this instrument. Faced with the problem, The proposal is to make changes related to the recognition of the license plate and the vest used by motorcycle drivers.

The proposal comes from the Secretary of Security and will be presented to Mayor Claudia López in the next few hours. It consists of reviving a measure that worked in Bogotá in 2008: identify motorcyclists through reflective vests and that match the motorcycle plate and the helmet.

“The possibility that the vest can be returned during the day with the complete identification of the plate, that is a measure that can only be established by the Congress of the Republic,” explained Hugo Acero, quoted by Noticias Caracol.

Motorcycles in Bogotá are used for robberies

According to the official, this measure would mitigate motorcycle thefts, among other things, because criminals would have to steal the motorcycle, helmet and vest.

“Most of the motorcycles that are stolen in the city are not in assault, it is simply motorcycles that were parked somewhere and when the owner arrives, they do not appear,” added the official.

The data was released by Acero after a study revealed by the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce, which shows that the district administration is cracking on security. For example, 76% of those consulted say that insecurity in the city increased in 2020, a figure higher than that registered in 2019, when it was 60%.

The report, called the Perception and Victimization Survey in Bogotá, also ensures that the cell phone is the object that is most stolen in the city.
