The mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, spoke about the case of Javier Ordóñez, a 46-year-old lawyer who died in the middle of a police procedure in Engativá in the early hours of this Wednesday.
López described the incident as an “abuse of authority” and assured that the Mayor’s Office will follow the case.

“Today we wake up with news that saddens and outrages us: a case of police abuse in the town of Engativá. We send our embrace, solidarity and condolence to his family. Police abuse is unacceptable. What legitimizes the action of an authority is that you exercise in a legitimate way, without any type of abuse. In the video you can see that there is a citizen in a state of derangement, that he was already being controlled and that all he was asking was that they not attack him again. There is no clear explanation and the citizen ends up dying, “says the mayor.
He also confirmed that a dialogue table will be set up with various authorities to address the case. “We are going to preside over the human rights and coexistence table in Bogotá where, together with the Ombudsman and the Attorney General’s Office, we will work in two ways: in guaranteeing Javier’s family that they have psychosocial and judicial assistance so that there is an exemplary conviction of those directly responsible for this case. But, on the other hand, for there to be a deep and serious restructuring within the Police that prevents and punishes cases of police abuse, “said López.

The mayor also commented that this has not been the only case of abuse of authority and that, despite that, the Police have not made significant reforms.
“Exercising authority in accordance with the Constitution is a fundamental guarantee in a democracy: without trust and without respect for citizens, there can be no exercise of authority. We condemn this and other cases of abuse of authority that have occurred against young people, against trans people. … we do not admit abuse of authority in Bogotá. Police abuse is unacceptable. From the Mayor’s Office we have denounced it, we have asked the Police to take serious measures. Unfortunately, that has not happened. ”

The president had already spoken from her Twitter account:
Since @Bogota We will offer Javier’s family legal assistance so that there is an exemplary sentence, not only for those directly responsible, but also so that there is a structural reform that prevents and punishes police abuse. This is not from bad apples. Life is sacred! https://t.co/xzfMgK3w0v
