Colombia closed August, the worst month of the coronavirus pandemic, with 615,168 confirmed infections and 19,663 deaths, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
On this day, the health entity recorded 7,230 new cases and 299 deaths, while 134,741 infections (21.9%) are still active and a total of 459,475 people have been recovered (74.6%).
The country had ended July with 295,508 positive cases and 10,105 deaths, which means that in August it added 319,660 infected, more than double accumulated in five months, and almost doubled the deaths to add 9,558 this month.
The worst day so far was on August 19, when the country recorded a record of 13,056 infected, and in deaths, on August 22, with 400 deaths.
This Monday was also the last of the mandatory general quarantine in force in Colombia since last March 25, a measure that from tomorrow will be replaced by a “selective isolation” with specific restrictions on activities in order to reactivate the economy.
Decline in figures
The number of daily infections continues to decline in the country and the 7,230 this Monday is the lowest since August 4 when 7,129 positive cases were registered, which for some experts may be related to the reduction in the number of tests in the last days.
Of the cases reported this Monday, 2,049 are from Bogotá and 1,212 from the department of Antioquia, the two areas most affected by the pandemic.
Smaller figures were recorded in Santander (438), Valle del Cauca (395), Cundinamarca (345), Cesar (301), Norte de Santander (242), Caquetá (207), Meta (199), Tolima (177) and Magdalena (172).
In addition to these departments, there were more than 100 cases in Córdoba (170), Huila (160), Atlántico (121), Risaralda (120), Bolívar (119) and La Guajira (115).
The places with the most accumulated infections continue to be Bogotá (211,300), Antioquia (80,996), Atlántico (64,128), Valle del Cauca (46,944), Bolívar (25,267), Cundinamarca (23,128), Córdoba (19,738), Santander (18,211), Nariño (14,086), Magdalena (12,460), Norte de Santander (11,850) and Sucre (11,709).
Of the 299 deaths, the Ministry of Health reported that almost all, 297, correspond to previous days and only two to this Monday.
Of the 299 deaths registered this Monday, 62 correspond to Bogotá, followed by the departments of Antioquia and Córdoba (both with 42), Valle del Cauca (25), Santander (22), Cundinamarca (20) and Cesar (11).
There were also deaths in Nariño (10), Atlántico and Meta (8), Huila (6), Magdalena, La Guajira, Boyacá and Cauca (five each), Norte de Santander (4), Sucre, Tolima, Quindío and Risaralda ( three each), Amazonas and Caldas (2), and Bolívar, Caquetá and Putumayo (1).
The Ministry of Health processed 30,626 samples this Monday, of which 25,349 were PCR and 5,277 of antigen, for a total of 2.74 million tests carried out since last March.
As part of the reactivation that the country will experience tomorrow, the country’s main airports will once again operate domestic flights, which is expected to give a boost to the tourism sector, one of the hardest hit by the pandemic.
