On March 30, Avianca promoted seven national routes that, according to them, would begin to fly from May 11, the date stipulated by the National Government to end the quarantine currently in force throughout the country.
Under the slogan Colombia # SeguiráVolando, ‘Fly through Colombia from May 11 and # AviancaSeguiráVolando por Colombia in May, the airline offered through its website and emails the national flights that would be scheduled from May 11 to 31, 2020, and for which a 5% VAT would be paid.
Until the moment of said publicity, President Iván Duque had not spoken, but hours later in the ‘Prevention and Action’ program, the president referred to the subject and assured that “no airline is authorized to sell tickets in Colombia after 11 of May”.
Although he did not refer to the specific case of Avianca, he stressed that only the Government is in charge of determining the right time to resume air operations.
“Until the end of the health emergency, which is May 30, there are no international flights in the country”he highlighted.
Before the president’s pronouncement and by order of the Transport Superintendence, in the hours of the night of this Saturday, Avianca spoke out on the subject and rectified the message sent to its clients on March 30.
“Following the instructions given by the National Government according to which” the operation of domestic flights is not yet authorized, therefore, there is no certainty regarding the date when it will be allowed to operate again and consequently resume flights “, Avianaca S.A. has proceeded to cancel all flights advertised in said advertisement“
In addition, he apologized for the misunderstanding and claimed to be working hand in hand with the authorities to “define and communicate the dates for restarting operations.”
